No two appointments are the same as each journey and family is unique, but there are a few consistent practices that make up a lactation appointment. I will ask questions about your health and birth history, I may look at babies latch, position of the feed, and any breast/chest or nipple soreness. I might offer advice or look for any signs of tongue or lip tie to refer to your family doctor. We create a plan of action together, ensuring you are comfortable and follow up when needed.
Overnight support is for anyone who needs an extra set of hands during the night so that you can get some much-needed rest. I arrive at your house at 10pm and finish up any light housework such as dishes; folding laundry, or tidying up. Baby is brought to you throughout the night for breastfeeding if needed, then their diaper is changed and quietly soothed back to sleep. Rinse and repeat until 6am when you wake refreshed to a clean house.
A Certified Lactation Support Provider (like myself) is certified by an independent organization to work with breast/chestfeeding dyads. Care is usually ongoing to support questions and challenges as your baby grows. We can assist in latching, hand expression, pumping, weaning, milk supply, engorgement, nipple pain and hold space to listen and learn. IBCLC's are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants who can work in hospital or breastfeeding centers as well as private practices. They work with complex challenges such as tongue ties, mastitise, and infant weight. Depending on the challenge, a referral to a IBCLC may be required, but not always ncessary.
Birth and postpartum is a profoundly personal time with huge physical and emotional changes.
Postpartum support is just that - support. An extra set of hands so you can rest and recover.
For your home - cleaning, chores, errands.
For your healing - provide opportunities for rest, & prepare meals.
For your family - sibling support, newborn care.
For your spirit - provide a safe space to talk about your birth & recovery, and navigate additional resources.
I do not have any counseling qualifications and cannot provide medical advice or prescribe medications.
Modern baby showers focus on the baby's arrival into this world, rather than the transformative journey into Motherhood. This day is about you and being held by the strong women in your life.
Each event can be customized to your request, but generally flows with a 10-15 min guided group meditation, sharing circle, letter writing to the Mom-to-be, red string ceremony, candle lighting, manifestation card pulling.
Optional flower crown crafting, herbal tea ceremony, gift opening, food train, or other modern baby shower activities can also be included in the event.
Peer support throughout your entire breastfeeding experience can be a game changer when it comes to supporting both new and experienced parents. La Leche League meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at the Cochrane Family Resource Network (https://cochrane.ca/2171/Family-Resource-Network). You can find more information about La Leche League meetings and support from other parents here: https://www.lllc.ca/cochrane-morley
